North Macedonian identity
The Northern Macedonian identity is a relatively recent development. Historically, Northern Macedonia was a part of the Roman, Bulgarian and Ottoman empires. Since 1991, Northern Macedonia has been an independent nation. The northern Macedonian population is a mixture of Bulgarian, Albanian and Roman influences. The language spoken in Macedonia is a Bulgarian dialect.
